Dan Walker, 43, wasn’t impressed with pal Martin Lewis after he reminded him of an age old defeat he suffered at the hands of the ITV business expert during a celebrity version of Mastermind in 2012. In a series of back and forth tweets, Martin teased Dan about losing on the infamous quiz show which left the BBC Breakfast host licking his wounds.

Producer emailed me at the end of the run to say I had one of the highest scores of the series but still lost to Lewis

The classic episode that aired eight years ago is no longer available to watch on BBC iPlayer, but Twitter never forgets.

Radio presenter Nihal Arthanayake shared a clip of his turn in the chair when he appeared beside Dan, Martin and Olympian Dame Sarah Storey, and was eager to share the memory with his teammates.

“Remember this @MartinSLewis @mrdanwalker and @DameSarahStorey? #COYS,” he quizzed.

In response to Nihal’s tweet, Dan laughed: “I’ve blanked it out,” clearly wanting to forget his humiliation at narrowly losing out to Martin.

Sarah chimed in: “Oh yes! My ‘specialist’ subject being one I knew less about than I thought!! It’s been so fab to see you 3 at different times since then too.”

Soon enough Martin replied and took a cheeky swipe at his TV pal while he was at it.

“I do indeed. I secretly think Dan is still smarting,” he said with a wink.

“To be fair though his score would’ve won most other heats. I also remember quite how petrified we all were.”

But Dan couldn’t get over the fact he missed out on taking home the winning title.

“It still hurts,” he giggled, remembering the agony at coming second.

“Producer emailed me at the end of the run to say I had one of the highest scores of the series but still lost to Lewis.”

But that admission only landed him in more trouble as Martin shared the post to his official Twitter page to “show off” his accomplishment of getting the better of Dan.

“Yes. I am only retweeting this in order to show off!” he mocked, as the BBC presenter looked on in despair.

A fan waded in and suggested a rematch, which Martin thought was a good idea.

But he couldn’t help but sneak in another little jibe towards his teammate.

“I think they should do a celeb mastermind winners contest (with Dan allowed in as fastest qualifier),” he typed smugly.

The Football Focus star seemed to have had enough as he exclaimed: “I’m in tears here!”

Over the years, Dan has seen his fair share of celebrity game shows, taking part in the likes of The Chase – where he got booted out during the face to face with the chaser – and Catchphrase.

The latter saw him excel, advancing to the last round where he could rack up some serious cash for charity.

But it didn’t stop him from making some epic mistakes along the way, like failing to interpret “breaking news” – quite an ironic error may we add!

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
